Happy Independence Day 2011

Jul 4, 2011

As we celebrate the 235th birthday of our great nation, we have much to be thankful for. We here in the United States live in a country that offers many freedoms. In my mind, the most prominent and important (in no particular order) are freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the freedom to pursue any economic endeavor we choose. If you think freedom of speech is not that special, speak to people in China who are suiting in jail for daring to criticize their government. Think freedom of religion is not important? Travel to Saudi Arabia, where Churches and Synagogues are forbidden. If economic freedom is not that important, then why is our country a nation of immigrants from all over the world? The United States is unique is that not only does our constitution guarantee these liberties, but by opening our doors to people from all over the world, we have created one of the richest nations on the face of the Earth. When you sit down to a barbeque today or watch fireworks tonight, be thankful we live in a nation that is unsurpassed in guaranteeing life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Back to more mundane matters. The stock market has staged a spectacular rally this past week, with the DJIA rising almost 650 points, and the S & P 500 adding over 70 points. All told, these indices were up about 5.5% each last week. To put this in prospective, it would take over four years of treasury interest to earn what the stock market returned last week! Of course, markets do go up and down, and now investors will focus on the weekly job report. In addition, congress continues to tussle over debt ceiling issue, which has about a month left to get resolved. Happy Independence Day to all!
