The Election and the Economy

Congratulations to Barack Obama, who will become the first African American President in our nations’ history this coming January. No matter what your political bent is, we should all be impressed with a man who has had to overcome a number of significant hurdles in his life.  I heard the following from my brother:

Many of us awoke to the news in wonderment: “An African-American president? Who could have imagined such a thing even ten years ago?”

However, my hunch tells me that the person most amazed by the turn of events was none other than Mr. Obama himself.

A man who was the child of a white woman and a black father, he hardly ever saw his father. In fact from the time he was three years old until his father died in when he was twenty one, he only saw his father once.

His parents were divorced and his mother died when he was 34 in 1995.

He used marijuana, cocaine and alcohol in high school and for the most part he was raised by his maternal grandparents.

How could Mr. Obama not be surprised?

Nevertheless, he went on to graduate from Columbia University and from Harvard Law School where he was the editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Last night he was informed that the residents of his country- of which 87% of them are non-African American and had enslaved the African people when they were brought to this country- had chosen him to be their next leader.

What can we learn from this?

Friends, if there was a person who had all the excuses in the world why not to succeed; who had all the reasons as to why to never become the President of the United States of America, that person is Barack Hussein Obama.

Yet, whether you voted for him or not, he never banked on his excuses and never gave up, and instead went on to become someone.

In my opinion, Obama’s election illustrates one of the things that makes our country great. The fact that a person can overcome significant obstacles and become the highest elected official in the land tells me that anyone can achieve whatever they wish if they work hard enough at it.

Of course, now that the euphoria is wearing off, the hard part of the job begins. Obama is facing a severe economic process that will require a tremendous amount of expertise to manage. Already, Obama is starting to consider candidates for his staff and cabinet posts. Hopefully, he will find a solution.

Down the Homestretch in the National Election

The United States will elect a new president this coming Tuesday. Polls show Obama ahead by a margin of between 3 and 10 points, depending on which one you give credence to.  Here is a link to the website Pollster.com showing their prediction of the election:

Here’s another:

Both polls show Obama comfortably ahead.  Of course, polls have been known to be wrong, but this election does not look that close according to the experts. In case you are still undecided, here is a link from CNN Money which describes how each candidate stands on the economic issues effecting our country:

One thing that is certain is that the new president will be forced to deal with several economic issues which have not been seen in quite some time. Lets hope that whoever wins, they or their advisors will have the foresight to be able to make a positive change for all Americans.
